about

There is a sound coming from the American Southwest that is different from other new music, improvisation, or avant-garde scenes - there is a groove, there is a timbral imagination, a mentality, a vibe, an approach to sound construction and organization that is wholly separate from other regions. We think of this as the desert avant-garde. These recordings capture some of the breadth of this scene: process-focused works; “real-time/out-of-time” kismet tracks; noisy-sliding-half-composed-kitchen-as-instrument; emotional outpourings; and richly produced beautiful long-form palettes. There is a rawness to this music - all of us are working together through the grief, uncertainty, and knowing-we-don't-know. There is a beauty in the roughness and a hopefulness in the gathering.
