3 Emotions for Sax & Clarinet is a triptych of improvised pieces based on “Addition by Subtraction”. Starting from the title of each movement both performers set a series of restrictive rules to guide the improvisation. “Overwhelmed” begins with a Glassian arpeggiation on an F Major 7th chord where both players struggle to stay in time while being recorded remotely. “Anxious” was recorded where on the first take only one performer was unmuted. Then on the next take the person muted was reversed. “Depressed”, meanwhile, required each player to select a single note, preferably low, and then record for 3 minutes - without the other performer hearing what the other was doing.
